Remembering General Nicolas Kibinda: 29 Years of Courage and Legacy

Today, Thursday, November 6, 2025, marks twenty-nine years since the passing of one of our most courageous heroes, General Nicolas Kibinda, who lost his life on the battlefield in Fizi while defending his people. Born on April 27, 1963, Nicolas was not only a soldier but a symbol of strength, honor, and love for his his people and his country. His story is one of sacrifice and purpose, showing what it truly means to fight for justice and freedom.

In 1991, driven by deep conviction, he made one of the hardest choices a person can make. He left behind his home, his family, and everything familiar to join the Rwandan Patriotic Front. He did it not for recognition, but because he could not stand by while his people suffered. His training began in Nyakivala, Uganda, where his determination quickly stood out. He rose through the ranks, earning the respect of his commanders and comrades alike. His fluency in French gave him an important role in interpreting enemy communications, helping the RPF anticipate and counter attacks. Every mission he took on was guided by a clear purpose: to restore justice and protect his people.

Even after Rwanda’s liberation, Nicolas’s fight for justice did not stop. In 1996, he embarked on another mission, this time to defend the Banyamulenge people who were being targeted in Zaire. Despite the danger, he led his men with courage and faith. On November 6, 1996, during a fierce battle in Fizi, he fought until his final moment, refusing to retreat. His sacrifice became a lasting reminder of what it means to live and die for a cause greater than oneself.

As we honor him today, we are called to reflect on the meaning of Kwirwanaho — to defend themselves, to stand firm for what is right, and to continue the work of those who came before us. Nicolas lived by that principle. He carried forward the spirit of our ancestors who refused to live in fear, who chose freedom even when it came at a great cost. His actions remind us that liberty is not handed down freely; it is earned through courage, unity, and sacrifice.

Today, as we remember his legacy, we must ask ourselves some important questions:

In the struggle for self-defense, have we achieved what they fought for? What is still missing? What do young people across the world think about the meaning of that fight today?

These questions are not just about history. They are about the present and the future. Have we protected the values Nicolas fought for? Are we still united by the same spirit that guided him?

Do we, as the younger generation, understand that freedom requires constant effort and commitment?

General Nicolas Kibinda’s story continues to inspire. His bravery teaches us that patriotism is not measured by words but by actions that uplift others. His dedication reminds us that the fight for justice never truly ends; it passes from one generation to the next.

May his memory live on in every heart that hungers for truth and justice. May his courage remind us that Kwirwanaho is more than a word, it is our calling to protect ourselves, to stand tall for our people, and to keep the dream of a brighter and united tomorrow burning in our hearts.
