In a heartbreaking turn of events, Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju tragically passed away following a shocking collapse during a high-profile boxing match in Ghana. Olanrewaju, a former top contender in his weight class, was competing in the third round of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra when disaster struck.
The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) confirmed the devastating news, stating that Olanrewaju lost consciousness during the fight against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu. Despite immediate first aid being administered at the scene, the fighter was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. However, it was reported that he was pronounced dead just 30 minutes after arriving at the hospital.
Remi Aboderin, the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Federation, expressed his sorrow over the untimely loss of Olanrewaju, calling him a brave fighter who was always unafraid to face any challenge in the ring. “This is truly a devastating moment for us,” Aboderin told BBC Sport Africa. "We never anticipated something like this happening. We will support his family in any way we can during this tragic time."
