Rwanda has temporarily closed the Ruzizi 1 and Ruzizi 2 border crossings connecting Kamembe and Bukavu in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo as part of preventive measures linked to concerns over the Ebola outbreak reported in parts of Ituri and North Kivu, particularly in Bunia and Goma.
The measures took effect on Monday, May 18, 2026, as authorities moved to reinforce regional public health protection and limit possible cross border transmission risks. The border crossings are among the busiest points connecting communities and economic activity between Rwanda and eastern Congo.
Before the temporary closure, the Ruzizi 1 crossing was commonly used by Congolese citizens returning home as well as Rwandan nationals traveling back into Rwanda. The crossings also play an important role in facilitating everyday exchanges between neighboring communities on both sides of the border.
The latest preventive action follows earlier measures introduced along Rwanda’s border with North Kivu. Expanding the restrictions to South Kivu reflects continued efforts by authorities to strengthen health monitoring and regional preparedness.
Health officials and regional authorities continue encouraging vigilance, cooperation, and preventive measures as neighboring countries work together to reduce risks associated with the spread of Ebola.
The temporary restrictions highlight the close relationship between public health and regional mobility in the Great Lakes region, where daily cross border interactions remain an essential part of community life and economic activity.
For the safety of the region, authorities say the temporary border closure is intended to help prevent the spread of Ebola and protect public health. Officials emphasize that such preventive measures are important in reducing cross border transmission risks and helping keep surrounding communities safe during periods of health concern.
