Kinshasa, DRC – In a public statement, the Mobutu family has strongly denied any connection to an individual featured in a viral video who claims to be linked to the late Maréchal Mobutu, the former President of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), and has allegedly joined the AFC/M23 rebel group. The family categorically stated that this individual has no ties to their legacy and has no right to invoke their name.

Maréchal Mobutu served as the President of Zaire from 1965 to 1997, and his tenure was marked by both significant influence and controversy. Known for his long reign and his “Authenticity” movement, Mobutu played a pivotal role in shaping the country's political landscape. However, his leadership was also characterized by widespread criticism for corruption, political repression, and human rights violations.

The Mobutu family made it clear in their statement: "We want to make it absolutely clear that the individual in the video, who claims to have joined the AFC/M23 rebel group, has no connection whatsoever to the Mobutu family. He does not have the legitimacy or the right to use our name. At no time, under any circumstances, would a member of the Mobutu family take up arms against the nation. Our commitment to peace and stability remains unwavering."

The family further noted that they had previously filed legal action against this individual for identity theft. They had alerted the relevant authorities in the past to address his fraudulent claims and prevent any further misuse of their name.

"We have already taken legal steps to stop this person from exploiting our name, and we will continue to pursue all necessary legal actions to protect our reputation," the statement added.

This public clarification is part of the Mobutu family's ongoing efforts to preserve their legacy and ensure that their values, as well as the principles upheld by Maréchal Mobutu, are not misrepresented or exploited for political purposes.
