Kinshasa, DR Congo — A doctor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is standing trial after a widely circulated video showed him physically assaulting a patient during a post-childbirth procedure, sparking public outrage and renewed scrutiny of healthcare practices.
Dr. David Balanganayi has been appearing before the High Court in Kinkole since March 27, facing charges that include torture, attempted murder, and aggravated assault.
The case stems from footage that surfaced online, showing the doctor striking a young woman while performing sutures following childbirth. According to reports, the procedure was carried out without anesthesia, with the patient audibly crying out in pain. The doctor appears visibly frustrated in the video, reacting to her distress.
At a hearing held Monday, March 30, Dr. Balanganayi told the court that his actions were intended to save the patient’s life under urgent conditions. He maintained that the situation required immediate intervention and that he acted in what he believed was the patient’s best interest.
However, the proceedings took an emotional turn when the doctor broke down in tears while addressing the court, leading to a 20-minute suspension of the session.
The incident has drawn widespread attention across the country, with many calling for accountability and raising concerns about patient treatment in public health facilities. The case has also sparked debate about the conditions under which medical professionals operate, particularly in under-resourced hospitals where staff often face high pressure and limited supplies.
Health advocates say that regardless of the circumstances, physical violence against patients cannot be justified. They argue that the case highlights the urgent need for stronger oversight, better training, and improved working conditions within the healthcare system.
The court is expected to continue hearings in the coming days as it examines evidence and testimonies related to the incident.
For many observers, the outcome of the trial could set an important precedent for how medical misconduct is addressed in the country.
This case is not just about a doctor or a patient.
Right now, many are watching, not just for a verdict, but for a signal, about what kind of standards will be upheld when it matters most.
